Indonesia's Green Industry Strategy Wins UN Recognition

Indonesia just earned a spotlight on the world stage for doing something right with its natural resources.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization named Indonesia a best practice example in its 2026 Industrial Development Report. Instead of just exporting raw materials, the country built entire industries around them, creating jobs and advanced products in the process.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced the recognition at a Jakarta workshop in late July. "This is evidence that Indonesia's industrial transformation is beginning to receive international attention," he said.

The UN specifically praised two major achievements. Indonesia's critical mineral processing plants and its growing electric vehicle ecosystem show how a country can climb the value chain instead of staying stuck at the bottom.

This matters because for decades, resource-rich countries often stayed poor while others profited from refining and manufacturing their raw materials. Indonesia flipped that script.

The country didn't just dig minerals out of the ground and ship them overseas. It built processing facilities, trained workers, and created entire supply chains domestically. Now those minerals become batteries, vehicles, and high-tech components right in Indonesia.

The Ripple Effect

This recognition sends a powerful message to other developing nations. You don't have to choose between economic growth and keeping your resources at home.

Tri Supondy, Director General at the Ministry of Industry, pointed out that investment alone doesn't guarantee success. Indonesia still needs to keep improving worker skills, technology, and innovation to expand its role in global manufacturing.

But the foundation is solid. What started as a national strategy to add value to natural resources has become an international case study in smart industrial policy.

Other countries watching Indonesia's progress now have a roadmap. Build the infrastructure, invest in people, and create the conditions for homegrown industries to thrive.

Indonesia proved that resource wealth can fuel real industrial transformation when paired with the right policies and long-term commitment.
