Injured Bird Gets Tiny Shoes to Aid Recovery

When a tiny whitethroat bird lay stunned on a road in Leicestershire, England, passersby knew it needed help fast.

The bird had been struck by a car on August 8 in Kibworth Beauchamp. A concerned couple spotted it and rushed it to Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital, where staff discovered the collision had left its feet curled and unable to grip due to nerve or ligament damage.

That's when the team got creative. Using cardboard, cotton wool, and medical tape, they crafted miniature sandal-style shoes to help straighten the bird's feet during recovery. The cotton wool provided cushioning between the cardboard and delicate feet, while micropore tape secured everything in place.

Amy Blower, an animal care team leader at the hospital, said the team had used similar techniques before with baby birds suffering from nutritional deficiencies. But this was a first for an adult whitethroat recovering from trauma.

The good news? It's working. The bird showed no other serious injuries from the collision and is making steady progress toward being released back into the wild within days.
