Injured Stray Dog Dumpling Rescued From Illinois Cold

A severely injured stray dog who spent days hobbling through snow and bitter cold in East St. Louis, Illinois, is now recovering after a determined rescue effort saved her life.

Gateway Pet Guardians first spotted the limping dog earlier this week and immediately mobilized to help. When rescuers approached, the frightened pup ran away despite her obvious injuries.

Jill Henke, the rescue's director of operations, quickly shifted strategies. She set up a humane trap equipped with a camera to monitor the area and wait for the dog to return on her own terms.

The patient approach paid off Tuesday afternoon when Henke received a notification that the dog had come back to the location. She rushed over to prepare the trap with food, and the hungry animal walked inside to safety.

The rescue team named her Dumpling and immediately took her for medical evaluation. Veterinarians discovered her back leg was broken in three places, damage so severe that amputation is necessary.
