Iowa Family Sets Record: 5 Generations, Same Birthday

When Emma Bell's son Arthur arrived on his due date last year, he didn't just join his family. He made history.

Five generations of the Bell-Harlow family from Silver City, Iowa, now share the same birthday: September 14. Great-great-grandfather Wilber, great-grandmother Addie (who recently passed), grandfather Fred Harlow, mother Emma Bell, and baby Arthur are officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the family with the most generations born on the same day.

Fred Harlow stands right in the middle of this remarkable lineage. "When you have children, they're a gift. This is a very unique gift," he said.

The family always knew their shared birthday was special, but they never pursued official recognition until recently. Emma learned she was expecting her second child with a due date of September 14, just after her grandmother Addie died.

"I grew up with my grandma saying 'You have to have a boy on September 14th,'" Emma recalled. Her first child arrived early, so she was determined to make it to the due date this time.

Arthur arrived right on schedule, breaking the four-generation tie the family shared with others around the world. "Lo and behold, he's a record breaker," Fred said proudly.

The pattern makes the story even more remarkable. "It starts with Wilber, so it actually goes boy, girl, boy, girl, boy the entire way through," Emma explained.

Both Emma and Fred say they won't pressure future generations to continue the streak. They believe Addie would have been thrilled to see her wish come true and the record officially recognized.

Now the family celebrates their birthdays together each year, sharing cake and the knowledge that they're part of something truly extraordinary.

"It's just amazing," Fred said. "Just kind of figured everything happened for a reason."
