Five generations of one Iowa family all celebrate their birthdays on the exact same day, and now they officially hold the world record to prove it.
Fred Harlow and his family received confirmation from Guinness World Records for the most generations born on the same day. The September 14th birthday club includes Fred's grandfather Wilbur, his mother Addie, his daughter Emma Bell, and his grandson Arthur.
"When you have children, they're a gift. This is a very unique gift," Fred told KMTV. "We always thought it was pretty cool, but I never thought much of it as far as record holder."
The family knew they could tie the existing record with four generations sharing a birthday. But Emma Bell was determined to make history when she became pregnant with her second child.
"I grew up with my grandma saying 'You have to have a boy on Sept. 14,'" Emma recalled. She went into labor early with her first child and missed the date. "I was bound and determined to make it our due date" the second time around.
Arthur arrived right on schedule, making Emma's grandmother's dream come true. "I think she'd be pretty proud and pretty impressed that we actually made it happen and had it be a boy on the 14th," Emma said.
The family discovered one more remarkable pattern that makes their shared birthday even more special. The five generations alternate perfectly between boys and girls, starting with Wilbur and ending with Arthur.
Sunny's Take
This is the kind of story that reminds us how magical ordinary life can be. No one in the Harlow family set out to break a world record. They just welcomed each new baby with love, and somehow the universe aligned five times in a row on the same calendar square.
What makes this story truly special isn't just the mathematical odds. It's a grandmother's playful wish passed down through the years, a daughter's determination to honor that wish, and a baby boy who arrived exactly when he was meant to. The Harlows now have something money can't buy: a birthday celebration that brings together five generations, all grateful to share one extraordinary day together.
