Ireland Duck Race Raises Funds for Accessible Golf

A quirky fundraiser in Boyle, Ireland just proved that making sports more inclusive can be as simple as setting 1,000 rubber ducks loose on a river.

The Boyle Golf Club held its first-ever duck race on the Boyle River, with proceeds dedicated to making golf accessible to all community members, especially children and people with disabilities. The ducks started from the main bridge and floated to the finish line near the Pleasure Grounds.

Susan O'Mahoney dreamed up the concept and led a dedicated committee to pull off the weekend event. Her team included volunteers Paddy McLoughlin, Karl Keenan, Michelle Quinn, Regina McLoughlin, and Paul Brown.

What made the event truly special was the turnout of helpers who weren't even golf club members. Many came from other community organizations around town, showing up simply to support a good cause.

Local police from Roscommon Gardaí Community Policing Unit joined in too, helping keep everyone safe while enjoying the atmosphere. A DJ spun music while kids got their faces painted, creating a festival vibe along the riverbank.

Leanne Connolly, known for her volunteer work with Boyle Celtic soccer club, won first prize. Second through fifth places went to Josie Reid, Michael O'Dowd, Ronan Nerney, and Gerard Mullaney respectively.

The Ripple Effect

This single afternoon of floating ducks represents something bigger than fundraising. When community members from different organizations come together for one cause, they build connections that strengthen the entire town. The golf club's focus on accessibility means kids and adults with disabilities will soon have new opportunities to learn and play a sport many thought was out of reach.

Local motorists even played their part, patiently waiting during road closures to keep participants safe. Cecil Tivnan stepped up with sponsorship for a spot prize, adding another layer of community support.

One duck race just opened doors for countless people to experience golf for the first time.
