Ireland just joined an elite club of countries that can produce affordable green hydrogen, the clean fuel many scientists see as key to replacing fossil fuels in heavy industry and transportation.

Researchers at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems discovered that Ireland's costs for making hydrogen from renewable energy match powerhouses like Morocco, South Africa, and Brazil. That's a big deal for a small island nation competing against countries known for abundant sun and wind.

The study examined how Ireland could produce multiple clean fuels, including liquid hydrogen, ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuel. It calculated the full journey costs from production through delivery to major European ports like Rotterdam.

Ireland's secret weapon is its powerful wind resources and stable business climate. The country also has expansion plans for renewable energy already in motion, a skilled workforce, and established industrial expertise that newer hydrogen producers lack.

The most economical option would pipe the hydrogen to Rotterdam or German ports, costing between $186 and $205 per megawatt hour including transport. That price point makes Irish hydrogen competitive for European buyers looking to ditch fossil fuels.

The timing couldn't be better. Europe is racing to build its hydrogen economy, and having a reliable producer with strong infrastructure and political stability right in its backyard solves major supply chain headaches.

The research team partnered with Ireland's Electricity Supply Board to map out the possibilities. They found that as Ireland's electricity demand grows, hydrogen production could actually help balance the grid by using excess renewable energy that might otherwise go to waste.
