Ireland's Solar Power Hits Record 10% of Electricity Grid

Ireland just hit a bright new milestone in its journey toward clean energy, with solar power supplying nearly 10% of the country's electricity for the first time ever.

Figures from EirGrid, Ireland's grid operator, show solar reached its highest monthly contribution in July, jumping from 8.2% in June and 7.8% in May. Combined with wind energy at 22%, renewable sources now provide more than 30% of Ireland's power.

The surge comes as Ireland races to transform its energy system. EirGrid says the country's power grid can now safely handle up to 75% of electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar at any given moment. They're already working to push that limit to 95%.

Director of system operation Diarmaid Gillespie celebrated the achievement as proof that solar is becoming a major player in Ireland's energy mix. The record follows an impressive first half of 2026, including a wind generation record in February and grid-scale solar hitting 1GW of power for the first time in April.

The news gets even better for wind energy. Five new wind projects got approved in the second quarter of 2026, the most since early 2025. These projects will add enough capacity to power over 180,000 homes each year.
