Ireland's Solar Power Surges 51% as Clean Energy Advances

Ireland just hit a bright milestone that many thought impossible for a country famous for its gray skies.

Grid-scale solar farms across Ireland generated 1,101 gigawatt hours of electricity in 2025, a stunning 51% jump from the previous year. These solar installations now power roughly 500,000 homes, proving that renewable energy can thrive even in less sunny climates.

The progress comes as part of Ireland's bigger clean energy success story. In 2025, half of all electricity flowing through Ireland's grid came from renewable sources for the first time.

Solar power reached its proudest moment on August 11, 2026, when panels across the country generated 1.26 gigawatts just before 1 p.m. At that exact moment, the sun was providing a third of the entire nation's electricity needs.

Ireland's solar capacity has grown to nearly 3 gigawatts today, with projections showing it will exceed 3.3 gigawatts by year end. That's enough to keep the lights on for millions of homes without burning any fossil fuels.

Wind power remains Ireland's renewable energy champion, providing 40% of total electricity generation. But solar is proving especially valuable during summer months when wind speeds drop and energy demand stays high.

The combination is working. Coal power plummeted by 52% in 2025, and Ireland shut down its last coal plant in June of that year. Gas usage also declined slightly as renewables stepped in to fill the gap.

The Ripple Effect

Ireland's renewable energy transformation is creating benefits far beyond cleaner air. The country is building nearly 1 gigawatt of battery storage capacity to capture excess wind and solar power instead of wasting it. During peak evening hours, these batteries already provide up to 13% of the grid's electricity.

The numbers don't even tell the whole story. Ireland's official statistics only track large solar farms, not rooftop panels on homes and businesses. That means solar's true contribution to powering Irish life is actually higher than reported.

With 10 gigawatts of additional storage projects in the pipeline, Ireland is building the infrastructure to make renewable energy work around the clock. The country is showing other nations how to transition away from fossil fuels without sacrificing reliability.
