The project at Kibbutz Ma'ale Gilboa combines traditional grape farming with solar panels installed overhead. The setup, called agrivoltaic farming, lets sunlight reach the vines while panels generate electricity above them.

The first harvest brought impressive results. Farmers gathered more than 30 tons of grapes while the solar panels produced hundreds of kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity. The solar panels even helped the grapes by providing shade during the region's brutal summer heat.

"When we established the project at Ma'ale Gilboa, we set ourselves a clear goal: to prove that the same land could produce not only renewable energy but also thriving agriculture," said Ofer Stavay, CEO of Doral Israel, the renewable energy company partnering on the project. "This first harvest is the moment when that vision became reality."

The team deliberately chose one of the hardest tests possible. Mount Gilboa's scorching climate makes growing grapes particularly challenging.

"This is an especially hot region, and we deliberately chose vines, which are among the most difficult crops to grow under these climatic conditions," explained Oved Yavin, Doral's director for agrivoltaic development. "We knew that if we could grow grapes in these conditions, we could grow almost anything."

The Ripple Effect

Farmers and energy experts from across Israel are now watching the site closely to replicate the success elsewhere. International specialists have also expressed interest in adapting the model for their own countries.

The project could breathe new life into farming by attracting younger people to agriculture. By combining traditional farming with cutting-edge technology, leaders hope to make agricultural careers more appealing to the next generation.

"Young people will not enter agriculture unless it is closely connected to renewable energy and advanced technologies," said Dubi Miller, chairman of the kibbutz's energy operations. "Our full harvest is a significant mark of success and gives all of us tremendous momentum for the road ahead."

Students from a nearby pre-military academy near Beit She'an helped build the solar array, giving young people hands-on experience with this innovative approach.

The success proves farmland doesn't have to choose between feeding people and powering homes. With smart design, it can do both beautifully.
