Italy Finances Ethiopia's Koysha Dam and Airport Projects

Ethiopia just secured a powerful partner to help bring electricity to millions and build a world-class airport.

Italy has committed to financing the Koysha Hydropower Project and supporting key components of Ethiopia's planned Bishoftu Airport. The announcement came after high-level talks in Rome between Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti.

The Koysha Dam represents a critical piece of Ethiopia's energy future. Italy pledged to help close the remaining financing gap, with both countries reporting significant progress on refinancing arrangements that should be finalized within months.

The hydropower project will generate clean electricity for homes, schools, and businesses across the region. Once complete, it will support economic growth while providing a renewable energy source that doesn't contribute to climate change.

Italy also praised Ethiopian Airlines' strong performance and confirmed financing for select components of the new Bishoftu Airport project. Technical discussions will now begin involving Ethiopian Airlines Group and financial advisors to develop specific financing structures.

The airport project represents Ethiopia's ambition to become a major continental aviation hub. Ethiopian Airlines already operates one of Africa's most successful carriers, and the new facility will expand capacity for both passengers and cargo.
