Italy Hits 88 Hours of Free Solar Energy in Six Months

Italy just proved that clean energy can be so abundant it becomes free.

During the first six months of 2026, the Italian energy market recorded 88 hours where electricity prices dropped to zero. That's four times more than the 20 hours recorded during the same period in 2025.

The reason? Solar and wind power are booming across Italy.

Solar energy generation jumped 19% compared to last year, while wind power increased 16%. In May, these two clean energy sources hit a milestone, covering 33% of Italy's entire electricity demand for the first time ever.

The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development tracked this remarkable shift. They found that the zero-price hours clustered during solar peak periods, when panels across the country produced more power than needed.

This success story shows how quickly the energy landscape can change. In just twelve months, Italy quadrupled its free electricity hours simply by adding more renewable capacity.
