California Hits 50% Solar Power for Entire Month

For the first time anywhere on Earth, a major power grid just ran on more than half solar energy for an entire month.

California crossed the 50% solar threshold in May 2026, marking a milestone that energy analysts never expected to see this soon. The state's massive power system, which serves nearly 40 million people, generated over half its electricity from the sun for 31 straight days.

The secret ingredient wasn't just solar panels. Battery storage transformed what California could do with all that daytime sunshine.

"Battery storage has transformed California's power system," wrote Nicolas Fulghum, an analyst at energy think tank Ember. "Batteries now shift huge amounts of solar power from midday into the evening peak, which is what allows this level of solar penetration in the system."

Those batteries solve solar power's biggest challenge: the sun doesn't shine at night. Now California captures excess energy during sunny afternoons and releases it during evening hours when families cook dinner, turn on lights, and use air conditioning.

May's mild temperatures helped California reach the milestone. Less extreme weather meant people needed less heating and cooling, which reduced overall electricity demand and let solar's share of the mix grow.

A massive new wind project that started operating in April also played a supporting role. The wind farm reduced California's need to burn natural gas at night, giving solar an even bigger slice of the energy pie.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't California's only recent solar victory. During the first five months of 2026, solar panels generated more total electricity than natural gas plants across the state.

That raises an exciting possibility: 2026 could become the first full year that California produces more power from sunshine than from fossil fuels. Just a decade ago, that would have seemed impossible.

Other regions are watching closely. California's grid serves as a testing ground for what large-scale renewable energy systems can achieve when battery technology and solar generation work together.

The breakthrough shows that technical barriers to clean energy keep falling faster than experts predict.
