Italy Powers 37,000 Homes Through Energy Communities

Italians are taking control of their energy future, one neighborhood at a time.

As of June, Italy counted 3,630 active renewable energy communities with a combined capacity of 303 megawatts serving 37,821 homes and businesses. These local networks let citizens, small businesses, and towns produce and share their own clean electricity instead of depending entirely on traditional utility companies.

Most of these communities start small. Nearly half use solar systems under 10 kilowatts, roughly enough to power a typical home. Only 35 communities have scaled up beyond 1 megawatt, showing there's room for massive growth.

The momentum is building fast. Between April 2024 and November 2025, Italians submitted nearly 49,000 applications for government grants to start or expand these energy communities. So far, 29,820 projects worth $895 million have been approved, representing 1.74 gigawatts of future capacity.

Lombardy leads the charge with 7,434 applications, followed by Sicily with 6,598. Even tiny Aosta Valley, Italy's smallest region, logged 208 applications showing the movement's nationwide appeal.

The government backs these communities through a $5.7 billion funding program split two ways. A 20-year tariff rewards communities for the electricity they consume locally. Plus, investment grants cover 40% of startup costs, making it easier for neighborhoods to get projects off the ground.

Projects approved now have until December 2027 to complete construction, giving communities time to build solar panels, manage permits, and connect to the grid. Final grant awards must wrap by August 2026 to meet national recovery plan deadlines.

These energy communities do more than generate clean power. They strengthen local economies by keeping energy dollars in the neighborhood. They build social bonds as neighbors collaborate on shared goals. They give ordinary people a stake in solving climate change instead of feeling powerless.
