Italy Tests Ocean Battery for Offshore Wind Power

A 50-meter floating reservoir off the coast of Calabria, Italy, is proving that the ocean itself might be the key to storing clean energy from offshore wind farms.

Italian startup Sizable Energy installed the demonstration system in April at the University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria's offshore test site. The technology mimics traditional pumped hydro plants but swaps mountains for seawater.

Here's how it works: excess electricity from wind turbines pumps a dense brine solution into the floating reservoir. When energy demand rises, the system releases the brine to a second reservoir on the seabed, where gravity and water pressure drive turbines that generate power back to the grid.

The concept elegantly solves a problem that has stumped renewable energy engineers for decades. Wind farms produce tremendous power, but only when the wind blows. Traditional battery systems can store some of that energy, but they're expensive and have limited capacity.

Sizable Energy's ocean-based approach offers a clever alternative. By using the natural pressure differences between the surface and seafloor, the system creates a giant rechargeable battery that taps into forces already at work in the ocean.

The demonstration unit required careful planning to install. French logistics provider GEODIS engineered the complex operation, using a 350-ton crane with a 50-meter reach to launch the 11-ton structure while meeting strict environmental requirements.

The Ripple Effect

This technology could transform how coastal nations harness offshore wind energy. Countries with limited mountain terrain for traditional pumped hydro storage now have a viable alternative that works anywhere there's deep water near wind farms.

The testing campaign aims to validate the system at pre-industrial scale and refine installation methods before commercial deployment. Success could open the door for energy storage systems that complement offshore wind farms around the world, making renewable energy more reliable and accessible.
