Jakob Ingebrigtsen Wins 7th Euro Gold After Achilles Surgery

Jakob Ingebrigtsen doubted himself every single day leading up to his comeback race, but that didn't stop him from doing the impossible.

The Norwegian running star won his seventh European Athletics Championships gold medal on Sunday, just 324 days after Achilles surgery forced him off the track. He returned to training only six weeks ago.

"Coming from the lowest of lows to be European champion again means the world to me," Ingebrigtsen told BBC Sport after clocking 13 minutes 15.29 seconds in the 5,000m final. "Not even I believed it could happen coming here."

The 25-year-old's last race was a disappointing 10th place finish at the World Championships in Tokyo last September. He lined up despite his Achilles issue, trying to defend his title as two-time defending champion.

Surgery followed in January. Most athletes would have taken months longer to return to competition, but Ingebrigtsen announced his comeback at the European Championships in Birmingham with a simple message: "If you're waiting for the perfect preparation, perfect conditions, perfect timing, you'll be waiting your whole life."

The race itself proved he was far from perfectly prepared. After a slow start, Ingebrigtsen worked his way through the pack but seemed trapped behind France's Jimmy Gressier on the final lap.

Then came the magic. With 600 meters to go, Ingebrigtsen knew he had it. He wrestled through the pack and unleashed a superb sprint finish that kept his perfect European record intact.

Why This Inspires

Ingebrigtsen has never lost at the European Athletics Championships. He's won gold in his past 12 European finals on the track since 2019, when indoor 1500m silver was his only defeat.

Paula Radcliffe, the former women's marathon world record holder, called it "a textbook example of how not to run in your comeback race" before adding, "You cannot write off that man."

The victory tied him with Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic for most European Athletics Championships gold medals ever. For a two-time Olympic and world champion, this unlikely comeback might be his sweetest win yet.
