Jamaican Family of 4 Graduates Together from Miami College

Four caps flew in the air at Miami-Dade College's commencement ceremony last Saturday, all tossed by members of the same family celebrating an extraordinary achievement together.

Irving and his wife, along with their daughters including Joviana, immigrated from Jamaica to South Florida with dreams of building a better life. That dream came true in a way they never expected when all four graduated from MDC at the same ceremony at loanDepot Park.

"This is a very incredible moment, it feels very surreal," Joviana told reporters after the ceremony. "I honestly never expected that I would be graduating with my family, but now that I am, I am very happy, very blessed, very grateful."

The journey required dedication from everyone. The Lawsons turned their home into a study hub, supporting each other through late night assignments, exam prep, and the daily challenge of balancing family life with academic demands.

Irving reflected on the spiritual dimension of their shared accomplishment. "This journey was all because God has steered us accordingly and we are so excited for this moment to be walking the stage together as a family," he said.
