Janitor Drives $40K SUV to Work After 30-Year Journey

Sesappanna parks his Toyota Fortuner each morning in BC Road, Karnataka, steps out, and picks up his broom to start cleaning the streets. The image has gone viral across India, but the SUV represents something far deeper than an unusual commute.

The 30-year journey started in 1996 when Sesappanna joined the Bantwal Town Municipal Council earning just 50 rupees (about 60 cents) per day. He had only a third-grade education, and some days his family struggled to afford food.

His lowest point came when his father died and he couldn't afford funeral costs. He carried his father's body himself to the Netravati riverbank to perform the last rites, a memory that still drives him today.

Everything changed in 2005 when local police officer K.U. Belliyappa noticed Sesappanna was battling alcoholism. The officer gave him simple advice: stop drinking and focus on work and family.

Sesappanna took those words to heart. He quit alcohol completely and threw himself into his work, which eventually became a permanent municipal position.

His job starts at 5am and runs until noon, sweeping roads and driving waste disposal vehicles. After his municipal shift ends, he works additional jobs to supplement his income.

The Fortuner didn't appear overnight. Over the years, Sesappanna upgraded from a Maruti 800 to an Omni, then an Alto, a Ritz, and a Scorpio, each time selling his current vehicle and taking loans when needed.

He bought the used Fortuner by selling both his Alto and Scorpio and combining the proceeds with a loan. The purchase represents decades of saving, upgrading, and building the financial stability his childhood lacked.

What makes Sesappanna's story remarkable isn't the car itself. It's his refusal to see dignity as separate from his work.

He lives with his wife and three children and continues working the same sanitation job regardless of what vehicle he drives. His next goal is building a new house for his family.

When videos of him parking the Fortuner before starting his cleaning duties went viral, commenters flooded social media with praise. "Well deserved, the job has a huge risk for infections and diseases," wrote one supporter.

Another simply said: "He earned it."

Sesappanna's journey proves that honest work, no matter how humble, deserves respect and can build the life you dream of when combined with determination.
