Japanese Baseball Team Plays First U.S. Game in Alabama

A Minor League baseball team in Alabama is making history by bringing Japanese baseball to American fans for the very first time.

The Rocket City Trash Pandas will host Japan's Toyota Red Cruisers at Toyota Field on April 1, marking the first time a Japanese Industrial League team has ever played an exhibition game in the United States. The matchup kicks off the team's inaugural Global Baseball Series, a three-day event connecting professional, collegiate, and international baseball.

Hiroshi "Morris" Morioka, the Trash Pandas' senior manager of promotions and a Japan native, dreamed up the entire series. After working with Toyota's basketball team in Japan during the 2010s, he saw an opportunity when he joined the Trash Pandas, who play at Toyota-sponsored Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama.

"I came here thinking I can do something, because our baseball field is Toyota Field," Morioka explained. His vision expanded to include Alabama A&M University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, giving college athletes a rare chance to compete against elite international competition.

The Toyota Red Cruisers represent one of Japan's top 90 industrial baseball teams. These leagues play a crucial role in developing players who eventually turn professional, making them a serious force on the field.

The Ripple Effect

This cultural exchange reaches far beyond the baseball diamond. Toyota operates a major manufacturing plant in Huntsville, and the series strengthens ties between the company's American and Japanese communities while celebrating their shared love of baseball.

Local college players gain exposure to a completely different style of play. Fans in Alabama get to experience Japanese baseball entertainment traditions. And the event proves that minor league sports can create meaningful international connections.

"It's kind of my baby," Morioka said about the series. "Japanese pride, I would say." He's working to create what he calls an "unforgettable experience" that honors both American and Japanese baseball cultures.

The Global Baseball Series runs March 30 through April 1, 2026. Two days later, the Trash Pandas will open their regular season on the same field where they made history.
