Japan's First Female Jockey Wins Top Horse Racing Title

A 22-year-old jockey just shattered one of horse racing's longest-standing barriers in Japan.

Seina Imamura rode Juryoku Pierrot to victory in Sunday's Japanese Oaks at Tokyo Racecourse, becoming the first female jockey in Japan Racing Association history to win a Grade 1 race. The pair completed the 2,400-meter turf race in 2 minutes and 25 seconds, beating 17 other three-year-old fillies.

"Jockeys lose most of their races, so this feels like a dream," Imamura said after crossing the finish line. The moment was years in the making, not just for Imamura but for every female jockey who came before her.

Before Sunday's breakthrough, female JRA jockeys had entered just eight Grade 1 races combined while chasing that elusive first win. Imamura's path to this moment wasn't smooth either.

The Shiga Prefecture native made her debut in 2022 and quickly won several key races during her first year. But injuries derailed her momentum, forcing her into a difficult period where patience became her most important skill.

"I don't think I would have believed a year ago that something like this would happen," she admitted. "Life is full of unexpected events."
