Runners and walkers begin charity 5K race supporting cancer survivor fitness program

Jefferson City 5K Brings Free Fitness to Cancer Survivors

✨ Faith Restored

A community run is raising funds to keep a life-changing fitness program free for cancer survivors in Jefferson City. For 12 years, the YMCA's LiveStrong program has helped hundreds reclaim their strength after treatment.

Cancer survivors in Jefferson City have a powerful ally in their recovery, and a September 5K is making sure that help stays free.

The second annual StrideStrong 5K on September 19 will raise funds for LiveStrong at the YMCA, a program that has guided 53 graduating classes of cancer survivors over the past 12 years. The free 12-week fitness program helps survivors rebuild strength, energy, and confidence after the physical toll of cancer treatment.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. at JCMG Orthopaedic Center on West Stadium Boulevard, with runners and walkers starting at 9 a.m. The flat, paved course loops through the parking lot before heading onto the scenic Greenway Trail.

"After having cancer, it's hard to get back on your feet," says Sheila Schulte, health and wellness director at the Jefferson City Area YMCA. "We provide this service free for the community to get cancer survivors healthy again."

Each survivor receives personalized training tailored to their recovery journey. The program focuses on regaining physical strength while rebuilding the sense of community that often feels lost during cancer treatment.

The Ripple Effect

The YMCA has already held three LiveStrong classes this year, with another session starting September 21. Each 12-week cycle creates a ripple of healing that extends far beyond the gym floor.

When cancer survivors regain their physical strength, they often rediscover their emotional resilience too. The program creates a supportive community where participants encourage each other through shared experiences.

The 5K awards the top three male and female finishers across various age groups. Participants who register by this Saturday are guaranteed an event T-shirt, though registration continues after that date.

Every registration fee directly supports keeping LiveStrong classes free for local cancer survivors. That means more people can access the personalized training and community support they need to reclaim their lives after cancer.

The run celebrates not just physical fitness, but the human spirit's remarkable ability to heal and grow stronger together.
