Large group of diverse runners gathering on a Johannesburg street during sunrise for weekly club run

Joburg Running Clubs Build Community One Step at a Time

😊 Feel Good

Johannesburg's running clubs are transforming Saturday mornings into powerful community gatherings where strangers become friends, training partners, and even life partners. These free or low-cost groups welcome everyone from marathon chasers to first-time joggers.

While most people sleep in on Saturday mornings, hundreds of Johannesburg residents are lacing up their sneakers and hitting the streets together.

Running clubs across the city are building something far more valuable than faster finish times. They're creating communities where no one gets left behind, literally.

"Although some are faster than others, we always regroup after a few minutes," explained one member of the Braamfie Runners Crew. The approach reflects a common philosophy across Joburg's growing running scene: community comes first, pace comes second.

Most clubs charge no membership fees and welcome walk-ins, making them accessible to anyone willing to show up. Groups meet throughout the week, with Saturday mornings drawing the biggest crowds, though many offer weekday runs before or after work.

Georgia Hatzilias runs with multiple clubs, including The Late Run Club, Soleful, and Benchwarmers. "The crowds are quite different, and each club has something special to offer," she said.

The connections formed during these runs often extend far beyond fitness. Robyn Porteous, chairperson of Fourways Road Runners, met her husband through the club. "People find training partners, mentors, friends," she said.

Mohammed Sabi, who co-founded Winter Run Club, sees the group as a support network for mental health and community building. "This is not just surface level," he explained, noting that members often reach out privately for support.

The clubs also intentionally tackle barriers that keep people from running. Ruan Cloete of The Late Run Club said the group was created to make running less intimidating. "Some people might feel insecure, anxious or unsafe to try running, especially by themselves."

Safety measures include marshals stationed along routes and water points. Many clubs partner with local coffee shops, creating natural gathering spots before and after runs.

Benchwarmers, formed in 2023, now attracts 200 to 300 runners on Wednesday evenings. The crowds have grown so large that some neighbors complained about the disruption. Instead of dismissing concerns, organizers invited complainers to join a run and experience the community firsthand.

The Ripple Effect

These running clubs are strengthening Johannesburg's social fabric in unexpected ways. Local businesses benefit from the foot traffic and loyal customers who gather for post-run coffees. The Late Run Club partners with Pan Café in Dunvegan, where baristas time their opening to welcome returning runners.

RunRise Jozi meets at Seattle Coffee in Merrow Down, and their manifesto makes their values clear: "We don't care about your split times or your carbon-plated shoes. Whether you're chasing a marathon or your first kilometre, you've got a place on the pavement with us."

While some clubs like Pirates Road Running Club focus on performance with structured time trials and competitive goals, most groups prioritize inclusion over speed. The variety means there's a community for every type of runner in the city.

What started as individual efforts to stay fit has evolved into a movement that's changing how neighbors connect, support each other, and experience their city together.
