Joe Hisaishi Sets 3 World Records at Iconic Venues

🤯 Mind Blown

The legendary composer behind Studio Ghibli's most beloved films just earned three Guinness World Records for his sold-out concerts across the globe. At 75, Joe Hisaishi is proving that heartfelt music can fill the world's biggest stages.

The man who gave us the magical melodies of Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro just made history at three of the world's most famous venues.

Joe Hisaishi, the 75-year-old composer behind Studio Ghibli's most cherished soundtracks, received three Guinness World Records this month for his extraordinary concert performances. On August 17, during the final night of his seven-day residency at New York's Radio City Music Hall, he was honored for the longest consecutive run by a classical composer at the iconic venue.

The celebrations started even earlier. After his opening performance on August 11, Guinness officials presented him with two more certificates: one for the highest-selling classical music run at the Hollywood Bowl and another for most tickets sold during a classical composer's run at Tokyo Dome.

The numbers tell an incredible story. His three July concerts at the Hollywood Bowl sold 45,538 tickets, while his Tokyo performances in 2025 drew a stunning 133,453 fans. For a week in New York, he conducted the MasterVoices choir and Orchestra of St. Luke's while beloved anime scenes from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away played on screens above the audience.

"I've just been taking things one step at a time," Hisaishi said backstage. "At first, I was doing this in Japan, and then when I started doing it around the world, people all over the world accepted it."

The Ripple Effect

Hisaishi's success shows how music can bridge cultures and generations. His scores have introduced millions to classical music without them even realizing it, creating lifelong fans who might never have stepped into a concert hall otherwise.

His journey started humbly in 1982 with his first solo album, and his collaboration with director Hayao Miyazaki began two years later. He's also composed for filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, including the Golden Lion-winning crime drama Hana-bi.

"I feel that I should keep on going with what I initially set out to do – delivering music to each individual person," Hisaishi says, and those individual people are now filling the world's grandest stages to hear him.
