Johns Hopkins Powers 1 in 5 Baltimore Jobs at 150 Years

When Johns Hopkins celebrates its 150th birthday on February 22, Baltimore celebrates too—because the institution now powers one in every five jobs in the city.

The numbers tell a remarkable story of economic partnership. Johns Hopkins delivered a $40 billion economic impact across Maryland last year, supporting 149,000 jobs statewide, according to an independent analysis by Econsult Solutions. In Baltimore alone, that impact reached $19.4 billion annually.

But what makes this anniversary story truly special isn't just the size of these numbers. It's how Johns Hopkins has deliberately woven itself into the fabric of local communities through its HopkinsLocal program.

Since 2015, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System have spent more than $1 billion with local businesses. They've prioritized hiring city residents, purchasing from local companies, and investing directly in neighborhoods and community organizations.

Jeffrey Hargrave has seen this commitment firsthand. As president of Mahogany Inc., a Baltimore-based commercial construction firm, he watched his company evolve from subcontractor to general contractor thanks to Hopkins projects. "Johns Hopkins goes out of its way to make sure that local companies participate in their projects," Hargrave said.

The institution employs more than 42,000 people directly in Baltimore—22,000 through the university and nearly 20,000 through the health system. Those jobs create a ripple effect of economic activity throughout the city.

Research alone generates a $10 billion economic cascade across Maryland, including nearly 38,000 jobs. Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures has helped create more than 130 startups through 2024, which have raised $4.4 billion in venture capital—and 43% of that money stayed right here in Baltimore.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends far beyond paychecks and construction contracts. Johns Hopkins Health System provided $597 million in community benefits throughout Maryland last year, with $491 million delivered directly in Baltimore.

These benefits include free health services, medical screenings, free clinics, community building programs, workforce development, and reduced-cost medical care for those who need it most. Capital investments in buildings and infrastructure produce nearly $1.3 billion in annual economic benefits and support nearly 6,700 jobs in Baltimore.

Over the past decade, Johns Hopkins has committed $490 million specifically to local companies involved in design and construction projects. That's money flowing directly into Baltimore-based firms and Baltimore workers' pockets.

"Our success as an institution is inextricably tied to that of the city that we call home," said Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels. "Johns Hopkins has a unique obligation and opportunity as an anchor institution in Baltimore and Maryland to ensure our spending decisions help our communities flourish."

As Johns Hopkins enters its next 150 years, it's proving that institutions don't just serve communities—they can help build them, one local hire and one local partnership at a time.
