Jordan Installs Solar Water Heaters at Nine Hospitals

Hospitals across northern Jordan are now heating water with sunshine instead of fossil fuels, thanks to a new solar energy project that just completed its first major milestone.

The country's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced that nine government hospitals have been fitted with solar water heating systems. Together, these systems can store 35,000 liters of hot water, enough to meet daily needs while dramatically reducing energy costs.

This is just phase one of an ambitious three-part plan. By the time all 33 hospitals are upgraded, the project will provide 217,000 liters of hot water every single day across Jordan's healthcare system.

The financial benefits are substantial. The completed project is expected to save more than $375,000 annually in energy costs, freeing up hospital budgets for medical care instead of utility bills.

Noor Solar Energy installed the first nine systems after winning a competitive bid last October. The entire initiative costs $4.5 million and receives backing from Italy's government, working through the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund.

The Ripple Effect

This project does more than warm water. It shows how smart infrastructure investments can solve multiple problems at once.

Rasmi Hamza, who leads the renewable energy fund, explains that hospitals get a reliable, safe source of hot water while reducing their carbon footprint. Patients benefit from improved health services, and taxpayers see their money go further.

The shift away from traditional fuels also means cleaner air around medical facilities where vulnerable people seek healing. Less pollution, lower costs, and more sustainable operations create a triple win for public health.

Jordan has been steadily building its solar capacity, reaching 2,195 megawatts by the end of last year. Projects like this hospital initiative demonstrate that renewable energy works not just for electricity grids, but for everyday needs like hot water in critical facilities.

As the remaining 24 hospitals come online over the next two phases, Jordan's healthcare system will become a model for how countries can modernize infrastructure while protecting both budgets and the environment.
