Jos Trader Returns $2,400 Found in $15 Bag Purchase

When Sarah Luka opened the leather bag she'd just purchased at Jos's Terminus Market, she found 1 million naira (about $2,400) stuffed inside. The small-scale trader had paid just 6,000 naira ($15) for the bags.

Most people would face a serious moral test in that moment. Luka didn't hesitate.

Three days later, she walked back into seller Abubakar Dola's shop and handed over the entire sum. The money represented a fortune to both of them, but Luka saw it differently.

"I am a poor businesswoman. I know what it means to suffer loss," she told reporters. "If I put that kind of money that is not mine into my business, I believe God would punish me."

Dola had accidentally packed the cash while preparing Luka's purchase. He'd planned to send the money to a mobile payment operator but got distracted during the transaction. When he realized his mistake, he'd already given up hope of recovering it.

"I had completely given up because I didn't know how the money got lost," Dola said. "I didn't even think I put the money in someone's goods."

The Christian businesswoman and Muslim seller now share a bond that transcends their transaction. Dola's gratitude overflows when he speaks about her choice.

"I pray Allah rewards her with more than what she did for me," he said. "I pray Allah gives us more people of her kind who fear God. It's not easy to have people of her character."
