Journalist Micah Reddy Freed After 4 Days in Djibouti

After four agonizing days of silence, South African investigative journalist Micah Reddy is finally heading home safe.

Reddy, who works as Africa Coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, vanished from his hotel in Djibouti City on Saturday afternoon along with his local colleague Kooki Mahmoud. His family announced Tuesday that both men have been released without charge and are unharmed.

The two men disappeared around 1pm on Saturday when messages suddenly went unanswered. For the next two days, family members, diplomatic officials, and press freedom organizations scrambled to locate them with no official word from authorities.

Behind the scenes, the South African, British, and US governments worked to reach Djiboutian officials. The global journalism community rallied together, raising alarm bells and demanding answers about the missing reporters.

Djibouti's Minister of the Interior said Reddy was detained for lacking proper media accreditation, though his family noted he wasn't in the country to report on Djibouti itself. Authorities released him Tuesday with an order to leave the country.
