Judge Clears Ex-NBA Player to Return to College Basketball

RJ Luis Jr., who left St. John's University to pursue an NBA career in 2025, can now suit up for LSU this season after a Louisiana judge granted him a preliminary injunction against the NCAA Monday evening. The former standout never played a single NBA game during his time with the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics.

After a five-hour hearing, East Baton Rouge Parish District Court Judge Ronald R. Johnson ruled that Luis "did not actually play professional basketball." Luis hugged LSU coach Will Wade moments after hearing the decision.

His attorneys argued a simple but powerful point: the NCAA has allowed numerous players from overseas professional leagues to join college programs, so American players deserve the same opportunity. Luis's situation was especially compelling because an injury prevented him from even playing in the G League, giving him far less professional experience than many international recruits the NCAA had already approved.

"This is precedent. It's monumental," said attorney Tony Clayton, who represented Luis. The ruling allows the player to practice and compete while the legal process continues.

The NCAA had argued that Luis made his choice when he left college for the pros, and that "actions have consequences." They pointed to a similar case last season where Alabama's Charles Bediako initially got permission to play but ultimately lost his eligibility after five games.
