Judge Orders Google to Make App Stores Easier to Find

Android users are about to get a lot more freedom in how they find and download apps, thanks to a judge who refused to accept the status quo.

Judge James Donato ruled this week that Google must make third-party app stores significantly easier to discover in its Google Play ecosystem. The decision came after Google recently started allowing rival app stores like Aptoide Games to appear on Google Play, but buried them so deep that users needed direct links or very specific search phrases to find them.

Judge Donato called the current setup "not acceptable." He argued that even searches that are "only 70 percent properly phrased" should successfully surface these alternative stores. Google has one week to make the changes.

The tech giant will also need to remove what the judge called unnecessary "friction" from the discovery process. That includes getting rid of warning banners and changing the "View" button to a simple "Install" button, treating third-party stores just like regular apps.

The move follows years of legal battles over whether Google holds too much control over the Android app ecosystem. Critics have long argued that making it hard to find alternatives stifles competition and limits consumer choice.
