K9 Charity Gets Life-Saving Vest from National Charity

A two-year-old yellow lab named Charity now has an extra layer of protection as she helps law enforcement hunt down child predators across Kentucky. The specialized K9 just received a bullet and stab protective vest from a national nonprofit dedicated to keeping police dogs safe.

Charity joined Kentucky's Attorney General Office in May 2024 with a unique skill set. She's trained to detect easily hidden electronic devices like cell phones, flash drives, and micro-SD cards that could contain child sexual abuse material.

Working alongside her handler, Detective Shelby Guffey, Charity has already helped execute search warrants with law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Attorney General Russell Coleman calls her "the most popular lawdog in our Office."

The protective vest came from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a charity that's been equipping police dogs since 2009. Each vest costs $1,800 to produce, weighs just four to five pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty.

The Ripple Effect

The nonprofit has accomplished something remarkable since its founding. They've provided over 6,300 protective vests to K9s in all 50 states, totaling $6.9 million in donated protection funded entirely by private and corporate contributions.

With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s working across America, the need remains significant. The organization accepts donations of any size, though $1,050 sponsors a single vest for one dog.

Any actively employed, certified police dog over 20 months old qualifies for the program. Dogs with expired vests can also receive replacements, ensuring veteran K9s stay protected throughout their careers.

Charity's new vest is embroidered with a message recognizing the gift: "This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc." It's a visible reminder that everyday donors are helping protect the four-legged officers who risk their lives to keep communities safe.

As Charity continues her critical work protecting Kentucky families, she'll do so with an extra layer of security keeping her safe on the job.
