K9 Charity Gets Protective Vest to Keep Her Safe

A hardworking police dog in Kentucky just got the protection she deserves while helping catch criminals who hurt children.

K9 Charity, a yellow lab working with Kentucky's Attorney General office, received a bullet and stab protective vest from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest will keep her safe as she continues her important work detecting hidden electronic devices that could contain child abuse material.

Charity joined the Department of Criminal Investigations in May 2024. Her special skill is sniffing out easily hidden storage devices like cell phones, flash drives, and micro SD cards during search warrants across Kentucky.

Working alongside her handler, Detective Shelby Guffey, Charity has become what Attorney General Russell Coleman calls "the most popular law dog in our Office." Her friendly yellow lab appearance masks the serious nature of her work bringing child predators to justice.

The protective vest came through a charitable donation, not taxpayer money. It's embroidered with a message acknowledging the gift from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

The Ripple Effect

Since 2009, Vested Interest in K9s has been protecting four-legged officers across America. The nonprofit has provided over 6,348 vests to police dogs in all 50 states, valued at $6.9 million, all funded through private and corporate donations.

Each vest costs $1,800 but is sponsored for $1,050 thanks to the organization's efficiency. They weigh just four to five pounds and come with a five-year warranty, giving working dogs protection without slowing them down.

The program serves an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States. Any certified police dog over 20 months old can qualify, including those whose vests have expired.

While Charity's job focuses on digital forensics rather than physical confrontation, the vest provides crucial protection during unpredictable search warrant situations. Her work often takes her into homes and locations where danger could emerge unexpectedly.

Charity's new vest means she can continue her mission protecting Kentucky's most vulnerable citizens with an extra layer of safety that gives her handler and the entire team peace of mind.
