Kaduna Gives New Land to 80+ Families After 4-Year Fight

Imagine losing your home with just three days' notice, then waiting four years for someone to make it right.

That's exactly what happened to residents of Malali Low-Cost in Kaduna, Nigeria. In March 2021, over 80 families watched bulldozers destroy their homes after the previous governor's administration gave them a mere 72-hour warning. The demolition came despite residents protesting an earlier eviction notice that had been shelved just months before.

Now, those same families are holding land titles to brand new plots. Governor Uba Sani's administration delivered on a promise to compensate the victims, acknowledging that what happened to them was wrong.

Dr. Bashir Garba Ibrahim, who oversees Kaduna's land services, presented the titles to grateful homeowners. The move came after a January stakeholders meeting investigated how the previous administration handled the demolitions. He encouraged the new landowners to build quickly and urged them not to resell their plots, hoping they'll become permanent homeowners who help their community grow.

Mohammed Auwal, who spoke for the affected residents, praised the governor for listening to their concerns. Other families called the governor compassionate and people-centered, a stark contrast to their previous experience.

The saga began in October 2020 when the Kaduna State Development and Property Company served residents a seven-day quit notice. After protests, officials backed down. But five months later, a three-day notice arrived, and demolition crews followed immediately after it expired.
