Kaduna Governor Delivers $20K in Tech Grants to 8 Innovators

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Nigeria, just handed out $20,000 in grants to eight young innovators who are building solutions that could change lives. The checks were presented Wednesday, keeping a pledge made during International Youth Day two weeks earlier.

Among the winners are computer engineering students from Ahmadu Bello University who created a smart walking aid for blind people. Their invention uses technology to help visually impaired users navigate safely, turning their research into a tool that could reach thousands.

Fauziyya Muhammad Auwal, a student at Kaduna State University, received funding for ASTHERA, her space technology initiative. She's making history as Nigeria's first female analogue astronaut, selected for a 2026 mission at Poland's LunAres Research Station with Titan Space Industries.

Two other winners, Al-Amin Mohammed Idris and Shamsudeen Jibril, earned their grants after winning the National Board for Technology Incubation's NEXTGEN Challenge. Eight microchip designers selected for specialized training under the state's Human Capital Development Initiative also received support.

Gloria Ibrahim, Commissioner for Youth Development, said the grants show the government is "moving youth empowerment from promises to practical support." She reminded recipients that the Ministry exists specifically to help young people turn their ideas into reality.

The Ripple Effect

The funding represents more than individual grants. It's part of a broader youth investment strategy that's already opening international doors for local inventors, particularly in renewable energy and rural electrification.

The state has backed up its words with infrastructure too, funding an eight-kilometer road project at Ahmadu Bello University. More than 40 percent of political appointees in the current administration are under 40, giving young voices a seat at decision-making tables.

Information Commissioner Ahmed Maiyaki told the recipients to view the money as seed funding, not a finish line. "What matters ultimately is not the amount presented today, but what you build with it," he said, calling on them to develop solutions that can compete globally.

The governor's approach treats innovation as investment rather than charity. By backing projects already showing promise, like award-winning designs and internationally recognized achievements, the state is betting on young people who've already proven they can deliver.

These eight innovators now have the resources to push their work further, and Kaduna has models that other Nigerian states could follow.
