Kaduna Police Arrest 16 Kidnappers, Recover 410 Cattle

Families across Kaduna State are sleeping easier after police arrested 16 suspected kidnappers and broke up several criminal rings in just two weeks.

Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad announced the results Tuesday, revealing that coordinated operations recovered 10 firearms, 410 stolen cattle, and a vehicle taken from a mosque parking lot. The sweep also netted three suspected gunrunners and six people allegedly running a counterfeit currency operation.

The biggest break came when police arrested Abdullahi Mohammed, known locally as "Aala," on July 24th. Working alongside the Yan Sa Kai vigilante group, officers recovered an AK-47 rifle from the 34-year-old suspect. He allegedly confessed to orchestrating multiple kidnappings in Kaduna and neighboring Kano State.

Officers recovered 80 cattle and 10 sheep after a gunfight with rustlers who had raided Damanko Village. Two livestock owners were wounded in the attack but are now receiving medical care.

A counterfeit currency network unraveled after police caught 20-year-old Aisha Barau allegedly trying to exchange fake U.S. dollars. That arrest led investigators to two other suspects and eventually exposed a larger syndicate.

Police also busted gunrunners in neighboring Plateau State who allegedly supplied weapons to bandits. The three suspects are now helping investigators identify other members of the trafficking network.

The Ripple Effect

The recovered items tell the story of crimes prevented. Police found 190 solar inverters worth about ₦69 million and 10 lithium batteries valued at ₦9 million, all suspected stolen from a shipping container. Officers also seized 83 parcels of suspected drugs meant for bandits and 32 stolen mobile phones that likely belonged to crime victims.

Commissioner Muhammad credited the success to teamwork between police, military forces, the State Security Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and community vigilante groups. He specifically praised officers for their professionalism and bravery during the operations.

The police chief made a direct appeal to residents: keep sharing tips. The recent arrests came from credible intelligence provided by community members who noticed suspicious activity and spoke up.

For families reunited with their stolen cattle and communities freed from kidnapping fears, these operations represent more than statistics on a crime blotter.
