Kaduna's Free CNG Buses Save Commuters $3.5 Billion

Imagine getting to work, school, or the market every single day without spending a naira on transportation. That's the reality for millions of people in Kaduna State, Nigeria, where the government has been running 100 free buses for over a year.

Since July 2025, these compressed natural gas powered buses have been crisscrossing Kaduna on eight major routes with 200 bus stops. The best part? Unlike other states that offer partial discounts, Kaduna's service is completely free for everyone: students, civil servants, traders, and artisans.

The numbers tell an incredible story. In just the first year, these buses carried 3.2 million passengers and saved commuters more than 3.5 billion naira in transport costs. That's money that stayed in family pockets instead of going to bus fares.

Commissioner Ahmad Mayaki says the impact goes way beyond saved cash. Civil servants are keeping 40 to 50 percent of their salaries that would normally disappear into daily commutes. Families have more money for food and children's education.

The program is even keeping kids in school. Some students used to skip classes or drop out entirely because they couldn't afford the daily transport costs. Now those barriers are gone, and school enrollment numbers are climbing.

Healthcare access has improved too, especially for women who need regular hospital visits. When transportation becomes free, suddenly that doctor's appointment or clinic visit becomes possible.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits are rippling through entire households in unexpected ways. Mayaki shared that one resident told him the free buses helped reduce family tensions and even divorces. When men aren't spending huge chunks of income on getting to work, they have more to contribute at home.

The environment is winning too. Switching from traditional fuel to compressed natural gas means cleaner air and lower carbon emissions across the state. It's proof that programs can help both people and the planet at the same time.

President Bola Tinubu has been so impressed with Kaduna's results that he's now pushing for a national CNG transit program. At a meeting with all 36 state governors in August 2026, he held up Kaduna as the model for what affordable public transportation can achieve.

The Kaduna government has made it clear this isn't a temporary experiment. Officials say the free service will continue indefinitely, with no plans to start charging fares. They're currently compiling detailed data on the program's full impact to share with the public soon.
