Kano State to Host Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples

The state government announced it will host a mass wedding ceremony by the end of May under its Marriage Social Welfare Initiative, known locally as "Auren Gata." The program targets vulnerable community members who want to start families but lack the resources for traditional wedding expenses.

Deputy Commander-General Mujahideen Aminudeen of the Kano State Hisbah Board says the positive outcomes from earlier events inspired the government to keep going.

The program operates with careful safeguards to protect participants. Couples must obtain endorsement from traditional leaders in their communities and express mutual consent to marry. Both partners fill out application forms voluntarily, and officials stressed that no one is forced into marriage.

Before the big day, all prospective couples undergo comprehensive medical screening. Tests include HIV status, blood genotype compatibility, and general health checks to ensure couples can build healthy futures together. Female applicants also receive pregnancy tests as part of the health and dignity protocols.
