Kansas 11-Year-Old Mows 50 Lawns Free for Neighbors
Braden, an 11-year-old from Arkansas City, Kansas, is cutting 50 lawns for free to help elderly, disabled, and veteran neighbors. He's already knocked out 10 lawns in just two weeks through a nationwide program inspiring thousands of kids.
Braden is spending his summer vacation doing something most kids avoid: mowing lawns. But this 11-year-old from Arkansas City, Kansas, isn't doing it for pocket money.
He's tackling the 50 Yard Challenge, a program where kids mow lawns completely free for elderly neighbors, people with disabilities, single parents, and veterans. In just two weeks, he's already finished 10 lawns, working through intense summer heat and humidity to help people who struggle with yard work.
The program comes from Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, founded by Rodney Smith Jr. Kids ages eight to 17 can sign up in their communities to provide free lawn care to neighbors in need. The organization equips each participant with sunglasses, ear protection, and a t-shirt to get started.
What keeps kids motivated is a color-coded reward system. Every 10 lawns earns a new shirt color: orange for 10 lawns, green for 20, blue for 30, red for 40, and the ultimate prize, a black shirt for 50. Braden is already sporting his orange shirt and aiming for that black one before summer ends.

"He's fairly new to the program but he's been at it ever since joining," Smith Jr. tells Upworthy. "He has a great work ethic from what I can tell."
The Ripple Effect
Braden isn't alone in this mission. Over 6,000 kids have joined the challenge since 2016, spreading across all 50 states. Together, these young volunteers mow more than 30,000 lawns every single month, free of charge.
The most participants come from Oklahoma, Texas, and Michigan, but kids everywhere are pitching in. When winter arrives, the program shifts gears to shoveling snow and raking leaves, keeping the service going year-round.
Community members have flooded social media with support for Braden and other participants. "You will be a blessing to so many this summer," one commenter wrote. Another added, "I love these kids! They bring me hope!"
If Braden keeps up his current pace, he'll definitely earn that black shirt before school starts again.
