Kansas District Sees 4% Jump in Math Scores

Students across the Shawnee Mission School District are crushing their academic goals, with math scores jumping more than 4% and reading scores climbing nearly 3% above the state average in the 2026-27 school year.

The district, which serves over 27,000 students across 14 Kansas cities, just earned full accreditation for another year. Every single grade level either improved or maintained their achievement in reading, math, and science.

"We are so proud of our students for always striving for their personal best," said Pam Lewis, associate superintendent of leadership and learning. All five middle schools posted gains across the board in math.

Teachers credit a combination of clear communication and student-centered strategies for the wins. Students track their own progress using data notebooks, seeing exactly how far they've come and where they're headed next.

In classrooms throughout the district, teachers work on whiteboards alongside students to solve problems together. Physical movement helps kids grasp tough concepts, and technology serves as a tool only when it enhances learning, not replaces it.

The district focuses on what they call "micro moves that produce a big impact." Teachers collaborate regularly to share what's working, and students feel safe to take risks in spaces designed for their success.

The district is now tackling two "Wildly Important Goals" to build on this momentum: boosting student attendance and improving graduation rates. With proven methods already showing results, administrators and teachers are optimistic about reaching even more students.
