Kansas Roofing Plant Volunteers Build Homes Before Opening

Workers at a roofing plant that won't start production until 2027 are already rolling up their sleeves to help their neighbors get into safe, affordable homes.

Employees from GAF's new manufacturing facility in Newton, Kansas recently spent the day with Habitat for Humanity of Harvey County, working on a home in nearby Hesston. They insulated windows, installed attic baffles, added safety plates, and caulked the exterior to prep it for painting.

"We're incredibly grateful for GAF's continued support," said Ron Flaming, chairman of Habitat for Humanity of Harvey County. He praised the company for building meaningful relationships in the community even before opening day.

The timing shows unusual commitment. GAF's new shingle manufacturing plant won't begin production until 2027 and won't reach full capacity until mid-2029. When it does, the facility will create more than 130 skilled jobs in the region.

But the company isn't waiting to make an impact. GAF has already completed multiple volunteer projects and donated roofing materials to both Harvey County and Wichita Habitat chapters.

The Ripple Effect

The housing work represents just one piece of GAF's local investment strategy. The company is also tackling the skilled labor shortage that affects construction nationwide.

In partnership with Rhoden Roofing, GAF created the Promise Scholarship. Four students will receive funding to enroll in WSU Tech's Construction Technology program, helping them launch careers in the trades while strengthening Newton's workforce pipeline.

"We're proud to support Habitat for Humanity and the important work they do to help families achieve resilient, safe and stable housing," said Chris Peetz, GAF's chief operations officer.

These initiatives fall under GAF Community Matters, the company's social impact program that leverages its roofing expertise and resources to strengthen communities. The approach reflects a growing trend of manufacturers investing in their future hometowns before the first product rolls off the line.

For Harvey County families waiting for safe housing and students dreaming of construction careers, GAF's early arrival is already building something bigger than shingles.
