When Ashley Caligiuri walked into school Tuesday morning, she had no idea her college dreams were about to become reality. The Junction City High School senior learned she had won a full-ride Rudd Foundation Scholarship worth $100,000, one of only 50 recipients chosen from 700 Kansas applicants.
The achievement is especially rare for her school. Caligiuri becomes just the second JCHS student ever to earn the prestigious award, following Jadie Chauncey who won in 2017.
"I was in shock when I saw my mom and everyone," Caligiuri said during the surprise announcement. "This is so important for my family, and I am really excited about college."
The scholarship covers everything: tuition, fees, housing, meal plans, books, and supplies for four years at Wichita State University. Caligiuri plans to study health management and eventually help people through healthcare work.
Her path to this achievement included more than classroom success. While maintaining her spot in National Honor Society and Spanish Club, Caligiuri also interned at Kollhoff Pharmacy and completed pharmacy tech classes at Cloud County Community College.
For her mother Tasha, the news brought immediate relief. "I'm so happy and so thankful because this means that I don't have to worry anymore," she said at the celebration.
The Rudd Foundation specifically supports Kansas students who qualify for Pell Grants and plan to attend one of four state universities. By removing financial barriers completely, the program helps students focus entirely on their education and future careers.
