Kashmir Tech Startup Builds 'OS' for Apple Farmers

Three friends from Srinagar who grew up around apple orchards are building something Kashmir's farmers have never had: a complete operating system for growing better fruit.

Ehsan Quddusi, Izhan, and Uzair Javeed founded Orchardly in 2021 after realizing that Kashmir's world-class apple growers lacked basic infrastructure. While the region produces some of the finest fruit on earth, farmers had no unified system for soil testing, market access, or farm-specific advice.

The startup calls itself an operating system rather than just an advisory app, and the distinction matters. Orchardly combines multiple services into one connected platform: farm intelligence, physical stores for supplies, soil testing labs, and guaranteed produce buyback programs.

What makes Orchardly special is its hyperlocal approach. Two apple orchards just a few hundred meters apart can need completely different care because of elevation, slope, microclimate, and soil composition. Generic farming apps fail here.

So instead of offering one-size-fits-all advice, Orchardly builds customized intelligence for each plot. The team learned by listening to growers themselves, treating technology as the medium and farmers as the greatest teachers.

The Ripple Effect

If Orchardly succeeds, the impact extends far beyond individual farms. Kashmir's temperate horticulture industry has been missing the infrastructure layer that modern agriculture needs to thrive at scale.

The startup is bootstrapped and still proving its model can work beyond Kashmir's borders. But the approach addresses real problems: farmers losing money to information gaps, inconsistent quality, and broken supply chains.

By assembling farm intelligence, inputs, services, and market access into one stack, Orchardly gives growers the tools they need to maximize both yield and income. Physical stores ensure farmers can actually access the supplies the system recommends.

The buyback guarantee solves another chronic problem: market uncertainty. Farmers know they'll have a buyer for quality produce, reducing the risk that keeps many from investing in better practices.

As Quddusi and his co-founders scale their model, they're building from a position of deep knowledge. All three have personal stakes in Kashmir's orchards and understand the challenges intimately.
