Katherine Rallies as River Peaks Just Below Flood Level

When the Katherine River climbed to 15.27 meters on Monday afternoon, the Northern Territory town didn't panic. Instead, residents rolled up their sleeves and looked out for each other.

The river peaked just 70 centimeters below official flood levels, marking its highest point since 2021. More rain is forecast over the next 48 hours, but Katherine locals are meeting the challenge with practical preparation and community spirit.

Some rural families have already been isolated for several days as smaller creeks burst their banks. Along Emungalan Road, school children needed boat rides to reach class on Monday morning, turning a potential crisis into an adventure.

Local veterinarian Rupert Trembath has been ferrying family members across Leight Creek in his boat. He's also coordinating with neighbors to move livestock to higher ground, protecting horses from muddy conditions that could cause hoof problems.

"Talk to your neighbors," Trembath advised. "My neighbor who's slightly higher has offered his paddock if flooding reaches my property."

Emergency volunteers spent the weekend testing their boats in the rising river, ensuring equipment works perfectly before water levels become critical. NT Emergency Service chief Wayne Snell praised the proactive approach of getting ready before the situation becomes urgent.

The Ripple Effect

The community response extends beyond individual preparation. Neighbors are sharing resources, coordinating animal evacuations, and checking in on each other's emergency supplies.

Katherine Mayor Joanna Holden said she was "very proud" to see locals stepping up to keep each other safe. While she encouraged residents to stay cautious and monitor emergency alerts, she celebrated the "magnificent" sight of the full-flowing river and the community working together.

Emergency officials are encouraging everyone to verify their 72-hour flood kits contain working batteries, adequate food and water, important documents in waterproof bags, medications, and supplies for pets. The simple act of preparation gives families confidence and reduces stress when weather turns challenging.

The Katherine River hasn't flooded since 2006, when it reached over 19 meters. With the tropical low expected to linger until Wednesday, residents remain alert but optimistic, demonstrating that proper preparation and community connection turn potential disasters into manageable challenges.
