Katie Ledecky Wins 1500m Free, Extends 16-Year Streak

Katie Ledecky just reminded the world why she's one of swimming's all-time greats, winning the women's 1500m freestyle at the 2026 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships while extending a winning streak that began 16 years ago.

The nine-time Olympic champion touched the wall in 15 minutes, 36.09 seconds at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Centre in Irvine, California on Wednesday. The victory marked her first major international win competing in the United States, making it extra special for the hometown hero.

Australia's Lani Pallister pushed Ledecky harder than anyone has in over a decade, finishing just 2.53 seconds behind to claim silver. The race was the closest 1500m free competition Ledecky has faced at a major international meet in 13 years.

Pallister made history of her own, posting a lifetime best that made her the third-fastest woman ever in the event. Her time of 15:38.56 shattered the Australian and Oceanian records, improving her previous mark by half a second.

The first 400 meters saw a tight battle between the two champions, with Pallister matching Ledecky stroke for stroke. But the American controlled the middle portion of the race, then powered through the final 100 meters to secure the win.
