Kazakhstan and Israel Forge New Tech Partnership

Kazakhstan and Israel are building bridges through technology, marking a new chapter in cooperation between Central Asia's largest economy and one of the world's innovation leaders.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar arrived in Astana on January 27 for the first official visit by an Israeli foreign minister to Kazakhstan in nearly 16 years. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev welcomed him for discussions that moved quickly from diplomacy to practical solutions in artificial intelligence, agriculture technology, water resource management, and digital governance.

The timing signals Kazakhstan's determination to diversify its economy beyond oil and gas while tapping into Israel's global reputation for applied innovation. For Israeli companies, Kazakhstan offers a strategic gateway into Central Asian markets and a partner eager to modernize.

A business forum held alongside the talks brought together entrepreneurs and officials ready to turn conversations into commercial partnerships. Kazakh officials invited Israeli firms to participate in national digital transformation projects, including e-government systems and data-driven public services that could improve millions of lives.

Trade between the two countries reached $162.4 million through November 2025. While modest, officials see enormous untapped potential, especially in technology sectors where Israeli expertise shines and Kazakh needs are growing.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership extends beyond economics into values that unite diverse societies. The visit coincided with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and both nations emphasized their shared commitment to fighting hatred and preserving memory.

President Tokayev recalled how Kazakhstan became a refuge for many Jews evacuated during the Holocaust, a legacy of compassion that continues today. Sa'ar praised Kazakhstan's interfaith dialogue efforts, including hosting the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which brings together diverse faith communities to build understanding.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992, shortly after Kazakhstan gained independence, but cooperation remained largely low-profile for decades. Recent years have shown growing momentum as Kazakhstan pursues ambitious public sector reforms and Israel seeks meaningful partnerships with Muslim-majority nations.

Kazakhstan has positioned itself as a neutral diplomatic voice in the Middle East, maintaining relationships across the region while supporting dialogue frameworks like the Abraham Accords. Sa'ar welcomed this approach as a constructive contribution to peace and cooperation.

No major agreements were signed during this visit, but both sides described the meetings as foundational work for deeper collaboration ahead.
