Kearney Gala Grants Wishes for Nebraska's Critically Ill Kids

A room full of supporters watched as a critically ill Nebraska child learned their wish was coming true: a trip to Disney World and Universal Studios to meet Spiderman.

The magical moment capped off the 19th annual Make a Wish fundraiser banquet in Kearney on August 6th. This year's "Night of Champions" theme celebrated sports wishes and featured two former wish recipients as guest speakers, plus live and silent auctions to raise money for the foundation's mission.

Emily Marston, director of marketing and communication for Make a Wish Nebraska, explained what makes these wishes so powerful. "Really a wish is such an impactful thing," she said. "It provides a child with the hope, strength and joy that they need to get through a very difficult time in their life."

The foundation grants wishes to children diagnosed by medical professionals with critical illnesses. Marston said the impact goes beyond just joy. Doctors and families report that once kids learn their wish is being granted, they become more cooperative with treatments and handle medical visits better.

"They're more compliant with their treatments. They do better during the whole treatment, doctor visits, all of that, because they have something to look forward to," Marston explained. Whether it's a trip, a play set, or a cruise, the wish gives children hope during their hardest days.

The sports-themed evening showcased Nebraska wish stories close to home. Video highlights featured two Nebraska kids who wished to be Husker football players during last season. A wish recipient who attended the Daytona 500 spoke to the crowd, along with a child whose wish was to be a St. Louis Blues hockey player.

The Ripple Effect

Events like the Kearney gala create waves of impact far beyond one evening. The funds raised allow Make a Wish Nebraska to continue granting wishes throughout the state, giving hope to families facing unimaginable challenges. When a community comes together to celebrate these children, they're not just raising money. They're showing wish families across Nebraska that they're not alone in their journey.

Every ticket purchased and auction bid won means another child gets something precious to hold onto during hospital stays and difficult treatments.
