Kearney Students Sweep State Championships in 5 Sports
Kearney High School students brought home multiple state titles and runner-up finishes across wrestling, dance, bowling, and art this season. The school board celebrated 40+ students for their achievements, including several first-place state champions.
Students at Kearney High School in Nebraska are proving that excellence shows up everywhere, from the wrestling mat to the art studio.
The school board honored more than 40 students at their March meeting for recent state championships and national qualifications. The wins spanned five different areas, showing the breadth of talent in this Nebraska community.
The Dance Catz team finished second in Class A High Kick at the Nebraska State Dance Championships with a routine featuring 90 kicks. This marks their third consecutive year placing in the top two, and the team also earned the Academic Excellence Award for maintaining strong grades while competing.
Both wrestling teams brought home runner-up trophies from their state championships. The girls team included two individual state champions, Sloane Abbey and Stella Harbols, and the program now includes 75 middle school girls and 40 high school wrestlers.
The boys wrestling team fought through injuries and flu outbreaks all season before finishing second at the state duals. They beat Papillion-La Vista before falling only to Creighton Prep in the finals.

Sophomore Fulton Moyer won the Class A State Bowling Championship in singles competition. His coach called him a "generational talent" with a strong chance of repeating the win in his junior and senior years.
Thirteen students won Gold Keys in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, with their work advancing to national judging in New York City. Bailey Axtell earned an additional honor as an American Visions Nominee for her piece addressing child abuse awareness. Student Josslyn Flood was selected for the Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition, a rare achievement at the high school level.
Why This Inspires
These students show that dedication pays off in every field. Whether they're perfecting synchronized kicks, mastering takedowns, or creating thought-provoking art, young people in Kearney are putting in the work and seeing results.
Their success also reflects strong coaching and teaching. The girls wrestling program has exploded in growth, offering opportunities that didn't exist for previous generations. The art program continues producing nationally competitive work year after year.
Young people are achieving remarkable things when given the right support and opportunities.
