Kebbi Shortens Work Hours for Civil Servants During Ramadan

Thousands of civil servants in Nigeria's Kebbi State can now leave work early during Ramadan, thanks to a compassionate policy change that honors religious observance while maintaining public services.

Governor Nasir Idris approved the reduction after the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs declared the start of Ramadan fasting. The new schedule shortens the workday by two hours throughout the holy month.

Under the adjusted hours, public workers will clock in from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, the day ends even earlier at noon, giving workers extra time for prayers and family.

Hafsat Ibrahim-Tune, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Establishment, Pension and Training, announced the changes in a letter to workers across the state. She emphasized that all public servants should report to their positions during the new hours.

The policy applies to all government workers in Kebbi, a state in northwestern Nigeria where many residents observe Islamic traditions. Ramadan requires Muslims to fast from dawn until sunset, which can make long work hours particularly challenging.
