Kentucky Bank's $2M Scholarship Milestone Changes Lives

A Kentucky community bank is proving that doing good is just good business, reaching a remarkable $2 million milestone in college scholarships over 25 years.

Independence Bank's scholarship program started with a promise. When founding partner Charles A. Reid passed away in 2001, his final request was simple: help deserving students access college education. The bank honored that vision by creating a scholarship fund that same year.

The numbers tell a powerful story of commitment. Since 2001, the program has awarded more than $1.9 million to high school seniors across Kentucky's 15-county region. This year's awards will push that total past the $2 million mark.

In 2025 alone, 72 students received scholarships totaling $144,400. Awards ranged from $500 to $15,000, with 10 recipients earning $5,000 or more. More than 460 students applied, each bringing their own story of academic achievement, community service, and personal growth.

The selection process looks beyond grade point averages. The bank reviews academic performance alongside financial need, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and personal essays. They're searching for students who demonstrate resilience, compassion, and a commitment to making the world better.

"Our program supports high school seniors who believe the best and never stop striving," the bank shared in its announcement. "We've learned the best way to go forward is by giving back."

Applications are open now through February 24 at 1776bank.com/scholarships. Winners will be celebrated at an in-person reception in Owensboro this spring.

Twenty-five years of scholarships means hundreds of students who might have struggled to afford college are now nurses, teachers, engineers, and business owners.
