Anthro's special ingredient is called Proteus, a polymer electrolyte that starts as a liquid and then solidifies inside the battery. This seemingly simple trick solves problems that have plagued the battery industry for years.
Traditional lithium-ion batteries use flammable liquids that can catch fire. They also develop tiny spiky growths called dendrites that cause dangerous short circuits. Anthro's material eliminates both risks while making batteries 10 to 15 times stronger than conventional designs.
"When it opens, we'll be serving domestic, high-spec customers who frankly just need a domestic source of China-free supply," CEO David Mackanic told TechCrunch. The factory sits within a 12-hour drive of 70% of existing U.S. battery production facilities.

The timing couldn't be better. Chinese companies plan to start trial production of similar solid-state batteries in 2027. American manufacturers have been desperately searching for battery materials not controlled by foreign companies.
The federal government clearly sees the potential. The Department of Energy awarded Anthro $24.9 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, plus another $18.4 million in tax credits. Kentucky added $2.3 million more in exchange for 110 permanent jobs.
Here's the clever part: the factory can start production using existing battery formulas, making it easy for customers to switch suppliers. Once companies test and approve Proteus, Anthro can shift to manufacturing its own advanced material.
