Kentucky Film Industry Creates 6,000+ Jobs and $3M Impact

While major film hubs like Los Angeles and New York see production costs skyrocket, Kentucky is quietly becoming the entertainment industry's best-kept secret.

Film Lexington has helped facilitate 19 productions across the Commonwealth, generating nearly $3 million in local economic impact and filling over 6,000 hotel rooms. Kentuckians who once had to leave home to pursue entertainment careers are now finding opportunities right in their backyard.

Lisa Brin, who leads Film Lexington's efforts, says word is spreading fast among filmmakers. "Kentucky is a very untapped region, and productions have such a good experience here," Brin explained.

The state's appeal goes beyond beautiful locations and lower costs. Kentucky offers up to 35% in refundable tax credits through the Kentucky Entertainment Incentive, making it financially attractive for productions of all sizes.

But the real magic happens behind the scenes. Local residents are landing jobs as crew members and extras, gaining hands-on experience in an industry that once felt out of reach. Unlike coastal markets where newcomers struggle to stand out among thousands of competitors, Kentucky's growing film scene offers something rare: genuine opportunity.

"In larger hubs you are one of 1,000 and you are churning and burning," Brin said. "What makes us really special is you are one of a few, and you get that signature hospitality we're known for."

The impact extends far beyond film sets. Hotels are booking rooms, restaurants are serving cast and crew, and local businesses are providing everything from catering to transportation. Each production creates a cascade of economic activity that touches multiple sectors.

The Kentucky Theater recently premiered "She Dances," a film shot entirely in Kentucky locations including Lexington, Slade, and Somerset. The premiere celebrated not just the finished film, but the growing pool of Kentucky talent making these projects possible.

Film Lexington's strategy focuses on making productions feel welcome so they return and spread the word. That approach is working. As more filmmakers discover Kentucky's combination of affordability, beauty, and Southern hospitality, the momentum keeps building.
